Blog #77 — Wikidot: CSS Per Category Posted 04 Feb 2012 07:23
Something that's slightly annoying about Wikidot is that when it comes to creating new pages that previously didn't exist, the Live Template isn't taken into account. That is, if you use the CSS module in the Live Template, then that isn't applied to the page until after you save the page. All proceeding edits work fine, but the initial edit doesn't look how it's supposed to.
But of course, they don't call me a Wikidot Super-Guru for nothing! Read on to see how it's done properly.

Hi James. I'm using your CSS Playground app to test some css code that I plan on using with the "Yakshave" Google Chrome extension. I've never written any CSS before, although I did learn some of it a long, long time ago, and I have written html, an even longer time ago. Anyway, although it looks like the CSS code that I've written is correct, I need some html to call it. Unfortunately, the "Custom Content" box, which I've checked, keeps wrapping my html in a paragraph tag, and putting it in quotes, thereby causing it to be the html to be displayed and making it impossible to reference the css that I've created. I guess I can try renaming the class of my style element to the class of the div that wraps my custom content, but that seems like kind of a backwards way to do it. Is there a better way to accompish this in CSS Playground?
I magically inserted all the buttons on a page and viewed the source…

Oh I've been doing that for years… except I thought I was the only one who was doing it!

Hi James,
I might have just been my brightness setting on my computer monitor - the black text looks okay on my ipod.
The source can also be viewed - even without the button - through an Ajax call… I have them as bookmarks in chrome so I can just click on the bookmark bar to view source (or history, print, etc…).

Hi Kenneth & Timothy,
Glad you like it — Shame you didn't like the black-on-red though, 'cause I'm loving the contrast it creates.
Thanks for the short-page syndrome tip — I've fixed it now by setting a #content-wrap-wrap min-height.
The hidden-source thing is a bit of a pain — IMO, a Wikidot bug, which I'll report right now.
The theme is a work-in-progress, but there's nothing special about it really. It utilises very simple CSS anyway.

This is a pretty cool looking theme! I like the maroon wooden feel, and the top bar is nicely done.
The only thing is on pages such as the copyright page.

Looks good! Just the black text on maroon on the left sidebar makes the text a little hard to read…

Yeah! I'm in the middle of updating my site layout!
Hope you like the new CSS :)

Hi James, Hey, glad to see you are still on wikidot. Me too, just now from Canada with Chinese students, rather that from the Sahara Desert….
I am wondering about pairing my students in Canada (pre-service teachers) with ESL Chinese students in China… That would require each pair of students having a wiki page that they have password control over so other nasty classmates can't go in and change their work…. Is it possible to have pages that have pairs of people who have password power?
then the teacher in China and myself would both want to have access to all the pages on the site.
Is this do-able?
Thanks!
