Career

Previous Positions:

  • 2004 — For a few months I was a paper boy, earning $5 an hour, 6 days a week. I would ride my bike from 5:30am till 6:30am around the streets of Ascot Vale, and at 12 years of age, I was very tired throughout the day. My decreasing school results and possibly my sleeping in class was the reason I needed to resign.
  • 2008 — From February till the end of October, I began my first real job as a Service Cashier (AKA "Checkout Chick") for Safeway Supermarkets. It was the best workplace in the world, and I loved it to bits. I really loved my job as well. It made me happy to smile at customers and talk with them at the checkout, and providing them with exceptional customer service.

The only problem with Safeway was that it was so far away from home. Although it is only a 15 minute drive to get there, it actually takes an hour and a half to get there via the public transport (which is what I was relying on). So to get to work, work for five hours, and get home, going to work actually robbed me of 8 hours of my day. Strangely, where I live there is no Safeway Supermarkets, but only their competing company: Coles Supermarkets.

Current Position:

  • 2008 — When a second Coles store opened up in my suburb, I applied for a job there. And what do you know? I got it! It was very sad for me to leave Safeway and the rare workplace environment it possessed, and I really didn't want to leave. But as Coles is a five-minute bike ride from my house, I just had to take that opportunity. Having said that, I am loving my job — it's the same position, which I couldn't be happier for!
Aspirations

Prior to my work experience last year, I had wanted to be a doctor. I have always loved helping people, and I knew how helpful doctors were — what is more helpful than saving lives? I now know how unhelpful doctors are — they seem to be more interested in burning holes in our pockets than helping us get on with our lives. Aside from the career perspective, I was always interested in how the body functions, the amazing phenomena of the brain.

For my work experience, I went to a hospital to see what it was that doctors do. As it turns out, most of the time they are walking around and checking up on patients. Filling out paperwork seems to be the main criteria of being a doctor — that and be happy to take our every cent. I don't know how they live with themselves…

Work experience went for two weeks, so I had my second week of work experience at a Dental clinic. It turned out to be fantastic. It was really really interesting, and I loved the amount of learning I learned (I enjoy learning… most times). For a whole week I watched filling after filling after filling. By the end of it, I thought to myself: "If I watched a whole week of fillings and still enjoyed it, then I must want to be a dentist!".

It was only the start of this year that I realised I was following the wrong path.

I am a fantastic programmer. I say this because I enjoy programming, enjoy reading programs, and I can actually understand programs. Understanding programming is, in my opinion, the main criteria of a good programmer. In my programming classes, my friends just copied code out of the book, blindly, and not understanding a thing of its logic. I was the only one who truly spoke the language of the machine.

I enjoy programming so so very very much. It is a passion of mine. And I think I can become one of the best in the world. So why not? I need to stop making this a hobby and start making a career out of it!

My aspiration, is to do programming as a career.

Projects

I have a few projects that I am really keen on completing during the Summer holidays:

1 — Bunny Gotchi v1.8

Bunny Gotchi is a virtual pet on your calculator. I spent months and months making this program, and I have heard that people like the game. My project is to make the next (and final) version of Bunny Gotchi much faster than all previous sub-versions, and of course, make it an even smaller sized program than the last.

Details include a re-write of the program layout so that the program utilises loops rather than Lbls and GoTos, and rewriting the formulas for Bunny Gotchi's health.

2 — Bunny Gotchi v2.0

I intend on creating the next version of Bunny Gotchi. You see, because of my very high understanding of linking calculators in TI-Basic, I feel that this skill will be what really launches this next program. Although Bunny Gotchi v1 DID in fact utilise a "Connect Bunnys" feature, it didn't do very much at all. This is because I was lazy and the program took up too much memory for me to bother improving it. NOT because TI-Basic is limited in its connectivity capacity.

Breeding will be the focus of the Bunny Gotchi v2.0. I did mention that I wasn't going to mention any features of Bunny Gotchi v2.0, but I am fairly confident (not arrogant) that my competition's knowledge of calculator-calculator connectivity is limited, and won't be able to rob my idea. My other features, however, will not be revealed, as they are things that my competition is capable of!

3 — ComChat

ComChat is an artificially intelligent chat bot on your calculator. I aim for this chat bot to be the best on the TI market (for the 83 series, of course).

Details include an expandable database and comprehension of the English syntax.

4 — TI|BD

The TI-Basic Developer. This project is constant! Although, I do want to finish the tutorial on multiplayer games… maybe after I launch Bunny Gotchi v2.0!!!

5 — Piano

I am trying to create my own music. So far, I have nice little sections for different songs; but I need to create the rest of the song (otherwise it becomes repetitive and boring). I also have a few existing songs I would like to master:

  • Breakaway ~ Kelly Clarkson
  • A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics ~ James Horner
  • Love Song ~ Sara Bareilles Mastered!

6 — Project Now

A book that's taking me years to write. I just never have enough time…
